The Myth of Free Will

Today I would like to share a few words on will and the myth of free will.

We all have heard about the idea that we have been given free will, and that our free will is our Creator’s gift to us so we may make our own choices, right?

However, the question I would like to pose today is, how free is our will? And before we answer that question, what actually IS will?

Well, will – in essence – is focused intent.

Very simply put, within the focused consciousness of Source, the Universe, however you want to call it, is held a purpose, a Divine Purpose. And in our Creation, our Creator shared that Divine Purpose with all of us. Divine Purpose is Divine Intent.

In essence, that’s the reason why we all have inner motives that drive us on, why we have motivating power or will power. We have it because Source shared His and Her Divine Purpose with all us in our Creation. So, will power is inherent in our very essence because Divine Intent is a part of the DNA of Source itself, if you can say that – and you and I, and all of Creation, we are simply an extension of Source.

So, Source shared Its Divine Purpose and Intent with us; and if you ever wondered why you have such a thing as motivation and will power and where it comes from, this is why and this is where!

Now you may ask, well, then, how come, so few in this world respond to Divine Purpose and follow motives that are aligned with Divine Motivation or Divine Intent? I mean, we all have will power, but if you use your will power to hurt other people, you are obviously misusing your will power. Your motivations are not aligned with Divine Motivation or Intent, right? So why is that?

In three short words: Fall of Man. What’s the fall of man?

Well, here is the thing. We are eternal Soul (and ultimately, Monad, but I don’t want to get there right now). But anyway, the conscious thinking I with which we are all identified, is the Soul in incarnation that does NOT know itself to be Soul. The Soul in incarnation that does not know itself to be Soul is linked to the Overlighting Soul, which DOES know itself to be Soul, via the so-called Consciousness Thread. Soul is synonymous with consciousness, that’s why it is called the Consciousness Thread. Now anyway, so there is a thread of energy linking the conscious thinking I, which is the Soul anchored in the brain, with the Overlighting Soul living on the so-called Soul plane. And quite literally, via that thread we communicate with our Soul.

Now, the Fall of Man is basically nothing more or nothing less than the breaking of that communication thread.

So there is a break in continuity, and because of that break in continuity, that break in communication, we are not doing a good job properly communicating Divine Intent in our daily lives, because we are quite literally cut off from our Soul – not in reality (because no life is possible outside of Source and there is nothing outside of Source), but in our awareness. And in so doing, we basically imprisoned our own consciousness, our Soul, in the form. That’s why we are all identified with our bodies today – because in our awareness, we cut ourselves off from Source, even though it is so obvious that we live and move and have our being in Cosmic Divine Intelligence.

I mean, you cut yourself in your finger, and tomorrow it is healed. You make love with someone and get pregnant and give birth to a thinking, feeling, intelligent human being without even knowing the first thing about DNA and cells and mitosis and meiosis and all the rest. And still we honestly think that we are separated from Divine Intelligence and even deny it. Strange, isn’t it?

So, the Fall of Man is the denial of Source and of oneness and of love and of cosmic intelligence. It’s basically a gap in our communication link – in the communication link between Soul and the Soul’s reflection of itself anchored in the brain – the conscious thinking I.

And in that gap somewhere, quite literally, Divine Purpose and Divine Will got lost. And that’s why we are cut off from Divine Purpose and Will. So the motivating power, will power, is inside of us because it forms a part of our DNA, however, when you cut yourself off from Source, you end up misusing the motivating power and will power for selfish purposes, for separative purposes. Why? Because having cut ourselves off from Source, we imprisoned ourselves – our consciousness – in our body.

And as a result and logic consequence, we also imprisoned our will. Which brings us back to the question.
How free is our will? We all talk about free will, but how free really is our will?

In the introduction of A Course in Miracles it says, “This is a course in miracles. It is a REQUIRED course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum.
It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time.“

It says, this is a REQUIRED course. Does not sound like we have much choice there, does it? Now, that does not mean that we all have to read A Course in Miracles, however, it DOES mean that we all need to learn the core lesson which A Course in Miracles teaches. And the core lesson of A Course in Miracles is: “Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.” Or to say it differently: Separation does not exist. The only thing that exists is oneness. And that’s the curriculum we are here to learn. The curriculum has been decided upon by Source. Free will does not mean that we can establish the curriculum. It means only that we can elect what we want to take at a given time.
